Tetracyclines are a group of medications belonging to the class of broad-spectrum antibiotics, specifically protein synthesis inhibitors. Their bacteriostatic activity is due to the inhibition of the bacterial 30S subunit of the ribosome. It is important to know that tetracyclines are contraindicated during breastfeeding and it is absolutely contraindicated to take expired tetracyclines due to their epimerization, which can lead to Fanconi’s syndrome, a condition of inadequate electrolytic impaired reabsorption in the proximal tubule of the nephron.
