According to NHBPEP (the National High Blood Pressure
Education Program) methyldopa, labetalol, beta-blockers (NOT atenolol),
nifedipine, and a diuretic are considered safe medications that can be used as
a treatment for hypertension during pregnancy. On the other hand, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and AT1 angiotensin II receptor
blockers (ARB) are contraindicated. Technically Methyldopa is recommended as first-line therapy.
