Pharma Quiz 65

Heparin (Clexane® among many others) is an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clotting and inhibit the growth of clots already formed. If there is a heparin overdose the symptoms might be nose bleeding,  blood in urine, red blood in stools, unusual bleeding, and many other side effects that need intervention. The antidote for Heparin is Protamine Sulfate. Although Protamine sulfate has a low therapeutic index (it can lead to life-threatening conditions such as systemic hypotension, allergic reactions, and pulmonary vasoconstriction), it is the only antidote registered to reverse the effects of Heparin overdose.
