Setrons in short

5-HT3 SELECTIVE SEROTONIN RECEPTOR ANTAGONISTS SETRONS IN SHORT

Selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonists, aka Setrons, are medications used to prevent chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (RINV).

Setrons work by selectively inhibiting the serotonin 5-HT3 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the area postrema, and in the vagal nerve terminations in the GI tract.

Setrons include: Ondansetron (Zofran®), Granisetron (Kytril®), Palonosetron (Aloxi®), and Tropisetron (Navoban®)

Side effects of Setrons include headache, constipation, arrhythmia, serotonin syndrome (in concomitant use of serotoninergic medications such as SSRIs, SNRIs) , etc…

Setrons are contraindicated in concomitant use of Apomorphine because of the increased risk of unconsciousness and hypotension.
