Setrons not only act on area postrema of the brain, specifically the chemoreceptor trigger zone but also in the vagal nerve reducing the stimulus of nausea and vomiting. The brand name of Ondansetron is Zofran®. Setrons are not indicated for treating kinetosis or diarrhea, they are indicated to treat CINV (chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting), PONV (postoperative nausea and vomiting, and RINV (radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting). Setrons act as selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. The brand name of Granisetron is Kytril®. Apomorphine may increase the risk of hypotension and unconsciousness when taken along with setrons. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are not common side effects of setrons. Constipation and headache are common side effects. Seizures, arrhythmia, and coma are all serious side effects of setrons. All the medications that can increase the serotonin levels can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when taken along with setrons (including SSRIs). Setrons do not act on Dopamine receptors.
