The main use of triptans is to treat migraine attacks and cluster headaches. Triptans are not used to prevent migraine attacks. Triptans act by agonizing the serotonin 5-HT 1b/1d receptors, determining vasoconstriction. The pioneer molecule of triptans is Sumatritptan (known and sold under the brand name Imitrex® among many others). Triptans are used only off-label in children. The brand name of Eletriptan is Relpax®. Triptans should be administered as soon as the migraine attack starts. Triptans are contraindicated in the concomitant use of MAOI, SSRI, and ergot alkaloids due to the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. The only triptan used in pregnancy is Sumatriptan. The side effects of triptans are commonly known as “triptans sensations”.
